I am an equine veterinarian with a practice dedicated to sports medicine and performance horses. In addition my significant other is a hunter/jumper trainer and a Grand Prix show jumping rider. I compete my own horses in dressage as well as the jumpers. We have been using the Sports innovations blanket as well as PEMF leg wraps on the horses in the barn for over a year now with excellent results. The horses in our barn wear the blanket at least once a week during normal training and more frequently at the horse shows.
What I find with the regular treatments is that it helps “reset” them from the day to day muscle soreness that results from every day training. Furthermore because the blanket is so good at resolving superficial pain and tension I find that when I examine the horses after a treatment I can better assess where their primary issues are and determine where they need more specific targeted therapy. We use the blanket at the horse shows and find that it can help tense horses feel looser and more relaxed. This is great in the dressage arena and also wonderful for the hunters so they can use themselves well and jump in good form.
I used the PEMF leg wraps on my own horse during rehab from a hind suspensory and felt there was improvement in her comfort level as well as reduction in some of the sympathetic edema and localized swelling that she had in the acute phase. I will often use the wraps in other horses with edema or stocking up with good results.
I have used the wraps in clinical cases with good improvement in healing as well. The following case was an acute on chronic check ligament injury. This horse had injured the check ligament previously and had a significant re-injury. The client utilized the PEMF boots daily to every other day for 10 weeks with significant improvement in ultrasound images. Continued follow up at 16 weeks showed further improvement and to date (6 months) the mare has resumed ridden work with no further complications.
